I have friends that have seen a physical therapist. My doctor now wants me to see one. What is a physical therapist?

A physical therapist is an allied health professional trained to help patients achieve optimal function following an injury or illness. We work with patients from different backgrounds varying from famous athletes to weekend warriors, adolescents, children with muscle, bone or ligament impairments. We assist them to returning to an active lifestyle or allow them to perform the duties of their job or daily living (e.g., walking). We also work with individuals with disabilities recovering from major accidents, developmental problems or illnesses.

Orthopedic Physical Therapists are specialists in exercise education, rehabilitation from injury or surgery and functional movement assessment (i.e., identifying movement impairments that may be causing pain). We can use physical means to foster your recovery from a work-out related injury or sport related injury. We can utilize equipment such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation to assist with pain, manual techniques to improve how your joints move as well as develop strengthening or range of motion exercises specific to your needs.
