Q

Watching the 2010 Olympic Games has inspired me to become active again. However, I have some low back problems and am recovering from recent knee surgery. A friend suggested I consult with a physical therapist to help with this transition. Why?

Consulting with a PT would be beneficial to you in order to ensure safety as you return to activity. Since you've been inactive for a period of time, starting slow and easing back into recreation is crucial. Your therapist will take a whole body approach to your evaluation and treatment. They will perform a thorough assessment of your general strength and flexibility and determine any deficits you may have. For example, chronic low back problems often result in weak core muscles, which have an effect on the function of our extremities. As a result, the lower back and knee need to be evaluated separately as well as together to get a good idea of how one area affects the other. Keep in mind, physical therapists are movement specialists. In addition to providing education with regards to exercise, your PT will examine your posture, body mechanics, and movement patterns to look for any factors that could affect your performance. A few visits with a therapist can be very valuable for identifying and preventing potential problems in the future. Remember, in Oregon you can see a physical therapist without a physician's referral!
